VFIRS Training

Virginia Fire Incident Reporting System (VFIRS) – Introduction to NFIRS 5.0 (National)

This introductory course teaches students how to use standardized forms to achieve uniformity in their incident and activity reporting. This training program is designed specifically to support local fire service organizations, and will assist them in providing data to their management and to decision makers, as well as to their State uniform fire reporting system. At a local level, the NFIRS data can be used to: describe a community's fire problem; support budget requests; improve decision-making for allocation of resources; assist in planning for future fire protection; help identify opportunities for scheduling emergency activities; evaluate code enforcement programs; and identify target audiences for public fire education programs.

This class is designed for individuals interested in basic VFIRS training. It meets the NFIRS training requirements for departments that received either a VFIRS hardware grant or a FEMA Fire Act Grant. It is also beneficial to departments seeking those grants.

VFIRS/NFIRS Data Analysis & Problem Solving Techniques

This course is designed for experienced VFIRS users who need enhanced fire incident analysis and reporting skills. This is not an introductory VFIRS level course. Exclusive use of the computer classroom provides an environment where students receive step-by-step instructions in exporting/importing VFIRS data, Excel, pivot table preparation, querying the VFIRS database, and publishing incident information (tables and charts) to the web.

This class is designed for individuals currently using VFIRS data. Students will learn how to query and assess the quality of incident data.
